Taramundi is Council, one Parish and one Villa of Independent Community of Principality of Asturias, in Spain .

It limits the north with San Tirso de Abres and Vegadeo, the east with Villanueva de Oscos and Vegadeo, the south with Santa Eulalia de Oscos and Lugo, and the west with Lugo again. Also it is the capital of the same council.

Rural Tourism was the pioneer in Spain in, taking this in the year 1984 . At the moment it owns ethnographic houses of village, hotels and museums and sets, between which it is possible to emphasize the museum of the mills of Mazonovo', defined like the greater exhibition of mills by squared meter of Spain.

From the geologic point of view the territory of Taramundi has the same characteristics that all the of the region, that is to say, their ground belongs to silurian with great presence of Slates appearing mixed with small samples of Quartzites and Limestone In the shores of Cabreira River can be appreciated a small piece of alluvial land, being the unique zone where it appears this differentiation of the land.

Its topography is conformed by broken and escabrosas mountains, mixed with diverse valleys oriented in all the directions and formed by numerous streams and brooks that bathe the municipality of Taramundi. The council represents an almost oval figure delimited by a set of mountain ranges and cordales. Thus by the north we found the boundaries To guide, and more to the east Mountain range of Piedrafita with heights that go from the 600 to the 900 meters. Also in its Eastern part and going towards the south we descried Mountain range of Ouroso, finding the maximum level of the council with 1033 meters. In its southern part we have mountain ranges of Sendiña to the east and the one of Teixedais to the west, with heights superiors to the 900 meters. Besides all this joint of mountainous accidents located in its bordering zones, Mountain range of Eirua is necessary to emphasize, included in its North half and with elevations superiors to the 700 meters.

Its hydrographic network is composed by numerous streams and brooks that furrow all the territory and that lower abundant of waters. Among all of them we will emphasize three rivers. Ouria, that reasons by the North part of the mountain range of Eirua and forms the limit of the council with Vegadeo and this one with San Tirso to get to end at Eo River . The other two rivers are the Turia and the Cabreira and bathe the southern part of Taramundi, receiving to their step the stream waters diverse. Both are united in the locality of Mallet I novate, also ending at the Eo.

Of his climatology it is necessary to say that Taramundi belongs to a zone along with Vegadeo and San Tirso in whom great temperature differences do not appear. Nevertheless, when being something remote of the marine coast and by the influence of mountains the winter becomes more duro than other zones.

As far as its vegetation, in Taramundi still we can appreciate some spots of brown forests of, Robles Birches and some zones of pine groves and Eucalyptuses these in the low parts of the mountain range To guide. Its fluvial fauna is richest, being able to find in its mighty exemplary numerous waters of trouts.

Capital

The capital of the council is the locality of Taramundi, located within parish of San Martin . It is the more important population center within all the council and conserves a great amount and variety of natural elements, architectonic and ethnographic that do of forced stopped her for any tourist who visits the region. It is here where a very ingrained class of tourism was born at the moment, the rural tourism, with the reconstruction for such effect of a hotel complex in the Rectorial, old parochial house.

Demographic evolution

The tendency shown by the council during the last century in its population evolution little differs from those of his around, showing a progressive depopulation to us of the rural nuclei, that put in danger some population organizations. Luckyly, lately a hope is abre for all this region and this one is not other than the implantation of a rural tourism that animates to reactivate all the zone, enjoying in her and her its wonderful landscapes. But we are going to analyze the causes that originated this gradual decrease. Doubtless the emigration had something to see in all the process, taking place movements and exits, at the beginning of the century last, towards overseas places in the Americas, and already in the middle of the century towards the industrialized zones more of the region, being these last those that truly affected the municipality. This the demographic structure of Taramundi was enough unbalanced yet, presenting/displaying a pyramid of inverse population with majority of people of more outpost age. As far as the distribution of the population we will say that this one is grouped in four parishes that are those of San Pedro de Bres, San Julian de Ouria, San Martin de Taramundi and Our Lady of Snows in Veigas, being the Taramundi capital, the unique one that surpasses the hundred of inhabitants. Within the economic activity in the zone it is necessary to comment that lately the primary sector has been losing weight within Taramundi, although still is the one that more use offers to us with a 53.6% of the active populace. The majority of the uses of local resources works with the bovine cabin, presenting/displaying a balance between which the milky production and the meat one work for. Also the presence of a good number of pig heads is remarkable.

The secondary sector and of the construction represents 21.06% of the population, being this last activity the one that has undergone a greater increase during these last years, following the general tonic of all the region. It is not either necessary to forget the nutritional ones, developed recently with potenciadoras measures of the traditional and typical resources of the zone. It is necessary to comment in the same way the important industry craftswoman cutlery developed in the council, that used, and continues using mills, mallets and fulling mills moved by the force of the water.

As far as the tertiary sector, this one generates to a total of 25.34% of the local uses, which represents an increasing increase of this one within the distribution of the uses in the three sectors. This comes dice by the repercussion from the rural tourism in all the municipality, being one of the pioneers in this class of benefit, with the opening of the first rentable apartments in the old parochial dependancies of the Rectorial one.

Crafts

Taramundi is famous by his Crafts, being the first municipality of the Principality of Asturias, that along with the Region of the Cider, has reached the denomination of " Zone of Artesanal" Interest; (Z. The denomination of Z.A that grants the Council of Industry of the Principality of Asturias, is a recognition to those communities, in which the crafts have special relevance, as much by the number and diversity of craftsmen, like by the repercussion that the mentioned artisan activity has on the GDP of that place.

Knives and knives

The crafts of denominated " are especially well-known; ferreiros", that is to say craftsmen who dedicate to the manufacture of knives and knives with traditionally forged steel leaves carbon in small artisan factories, and with wood handles of different types, but that traditionally they were preferably of wood of Boxwood, with a scenery realized manually with rubber-lacquer, drawing geometric forms and using colors that characterized and marked the own style of each craftsman. At the moment many pieces are realized also in stainless steel, and with different materials in handles, incorporating even precious metals until arriving at the accomplishment of authentic pieces of jewelry shop. The City council of Taramundi, has published a titled book " Steel in the Venas", whose author Rafael Utrilla Barbeito, realizes a route by this special bond that the municipality has had and has with the cutlery, becoming in addition a unique document like " tratado" on the techniques, materials, pieces and craftsmen, who throughout history have had in Taramundi.

Loom

The loom crafts also have special relevance, and count on a school of Traditional Loom, and craftswomen who make carpets, carpets, and diverse pieces realized with techniques and traditional dyeings.

Leather

The leather crafts, have minor at present relevance, because it is used essentially for the elaboration of complements, as the covers of the knives and knives, being in many realized cases these works by the same craftsmen who work and forge the cutlery pieces.

Agrifoodstuffs

It honors the agro-alimentary artisan industry, very being known traditional " Bread of Taramundi", and the artisan jam elaboration and liquors. We cannot either be forgotten Llagar, that he is the first and unique one that was created in this zone of the Asturian West, where the cider was not one of the most habitual products until years ago. The cheeses made in an artisan cheese factory, with goat milk, of ewe and cow, cheese of Taramundi, producing different types and with different flavors according to the degree from maturation and the used type of milk, being especially showy a type of cheese made with goat milk and fruits droughts.

History

The first signs that demonstrate the existence of human life in the council overcome to epipaleolíticos times, as they demonstrate to the rest of necrópolis tumulares to it found in spurs of the Mountain range of Ouroso and mounts of Pereira and Navallo.

Of the time of Roman domination, they are in the council diverse place-names as the names of Or I castrate in Ouria and Or Castros in Taramundi, that was inhabited by Egobarros, and which in the zone was founded to work the Auriferous operations . During the last century, and in relation to this historical stage was found several medals of Bronze corresponding to the time of domination of the emperor Nerón .

Of the times of Asturian monarchy, the discharge and low average age, few things we can contribute. Most remarkable and truly more important it was the property from the council to the powerful and vast territory of Castropol until Century XV . During this time all the mayors, administrators and judges of the different mayorships pertaining to Castropol met in the field of Tablado where they received orders of the episcopal power. But all this dependancy of Castropol ended the carried out confiscation by the king Felipe II as a result of having to support the expenses caused by the different fights in which the Spanish crown was inmiscuida. By this cause it sells to the people of the towns the old obispales councils, completing in Taramundi this fact with the sale in 1584 of the parishes of San Martin de Taramundi and San Julian de Ouria, acquiring the promise of which more never would be separated of the crown. In June of 1584 a regidor and three councilmen were chosen, two by Taramundi and one by Ouria, that the first laws of the council elaborated, counting for it with the participation of several commissioned neighbors. Some of these decrees were in force until the year 1783 .

Century XVIII comes marked by an incipient and fruitful ferrícola industry, as therefore they demonstrate the six mallets to it of espalmar and the forges recognized in the cadastre of Cove. In Century XIX this industry undergoes a change process, having to become a much more specific production as a result of the modern iron and steel industry that settles in the north of the country. Nowadays still one works in this branch of the work, conserving old woman traditions and elements that cause that excellent Taramundi produces a knife and knives, object of purchase for the tourism that shows this way.

Art

Within the patrimony conserved in the council, it is necessary to emphasize that Taramundi excels more by its ethnographic patrimony that by artistic the proper one. Even so it has diverse constructions of consideration.

Within the religious constructions we will speak of the parochial church of San Martin de Taramundi, founded on Century XVIII, and structured in three separated ships by arcades and with three gilded and polychrome altarpieces. Of these altarpieces the one that more flame the attention is the greater altarpiece, than is of baroque style. The other two are of a transitory style between the Rococo and the neoclassic one. These last ones are dedicated to the Crucified Christ and the Painful one. Another one of the elements pertaining to this church is the tower bell tower, which conserves in a one of its hornacinas image of San Martin Bishop .

Another one of the temples of interest of the council is the parochial church Our Lady of the Carmen in San Julian de Ouria, who contains two espadañas, placed one on the feet and the other on the sacristy. Its more important element is the image of the Virgin of the Carmen, located in the altarpiece of the presbítero and that teaches to diverse samples of the stage barroca to us. Also it counts on a solar clock of year 1770, realized in placed slate and in the outer wall.

Of its civil and popular architecture we will converse in the first place of the protohistórico town You Castros, located near waters of the rivers Turia and Cabreira.

In the capital we can find a location singular that it is the old Rectorial House, constructed in the century XVIII, and that palaciega is the typical Asturian construction, where we can observe the sum and compendium of the popular styles that occur in the region. In its construction one of the typical materials of the western zone has been used and that is the slate, whose use can be seen in cover and walls. Nowadays it is a hotel establishment of luxury and that has been one of the precursors of the rural tourism in all the Principality. The Indiana architecture also has its representation in Taramundi, being the old school of Bres its more characteristic example.

Finally, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of a fundamental element for the human existence, like it is the water and that has at the moment served and is used for the maintenance as an important and attractive industry craftswoman as cutlery, conserving itself in great state the mallets of Aguillón and Teixois. This last one is about 4 km of the town, and conserves within its constructions, a mill, drop hammer, a wheel to sharpen and a small power plant, all this moved by hydraulic energy.

You Teixois

Ethnographic set that was abierto to the public in 1980. It is located next to a small river and it consists of a series of facilities that all works. It has mallet, mill, fulling mill, stone to sharpen and until a small power plant feeds that it. The machinery is rudimentary. It is reconstructed in which it was necessary and preparation for tourist visits.

Mazonovo

Ethnographic set that concentrates a great collection of water mills, as much as manuals, distributed in three buildings and by the outside of the set, throughout the channel of abastacimiento of the water, also owns a power plant that gives light to all the set. It was the first power station that Taramundi supplied, and the main mill of the region.
